Tazewell County Reimbursement Project is a result of the combined efforts of the designated head of the Public Defender’s Office, Director of Court Services, and the Presiding Judge. The primary purpose of the Reimbursement Project is to alleviate the burden to the court of determining which defendant is eligible for court-appointed counsel and decreasing the amount of time the courts have historically spent on the process of appointment of a Public Defender. Another purpose is to appoint only those defendants who are eligible for a Public Defender.
The main objective of the Reimbursement Project is to appoint a Public Defender to a defendant who is categorized indigent. The method of selection is determined upon the completion of an Affidavit of Assets and Liabilities so that:
a.) The Court’s time is not wasted on reviewing each request;
b.) Defendants are assessed monthly payments for the services of a Public Defender;
c.) County expenses will immediately be recovered by having payments monitored and collected monthly at the beginning of a case as opposed to doing so at the final dissolution.
